A £4.5million swimming centre redevelopment named after Britain’s swimming golden girl, Rebecca Adlington, is to feature a ‘record-setting’ single-ply roofing membrane solution.

The District Council in Rebecca’s home town of Mansfield in Nottinghamshire is transforming the aged baths where she learned to swim and renaming it the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre.

Mansfield District Council has put energy efficiency and sustainability high on its list of priorities for the new building, which is already being hailed as “a superb 21st century facility”.

SIG’s, Design &Technology worked with the clients to design and supply a tailored roofing solution from their extended range of complementary roofing products, and won the contract for the centre’s seven roofs, covering a total of 2,000 sq. m. The design featured the world’s most advanced single-ply roofing membrane, FDT’s Rhepanol fk supplied by Design & Technology. Rhepanol comprises more than 70 per cent natural materials and carries a Life Cycle Assessment to DIN EN ISO 14040 part ff as testament to its environmental credentials – an accolade no other single-ply roofing membrane has achieved.

Design & Technology’s bespoke roofing solution supplied comprises waterproofing membrane, vapour barrier, cut-to-falls tapered insulation, 200 linear metres of maintenance walkways and a full man-safe cable system.

Due to reopen in January 2010, the new swimming facilities will see the pool hall restored to its former glory, with six swimming lanes replacing the existing four, new state-of-the-art changing facilities and an extended fitness suite.

Main contractors are G F Tomlinson and the roofing contract was awarded to SIG-accredited Ashgate Roofing. The work involves stripping off the old roofing materials and fitting flat and cut-to-falls insulation, developed by SIG as a one-piece design, overlaid with a vapour barrier and bonded singleply Rhepanol membrane. D & T’s site services will monitor work throughout and roofing work is expected to take around eight weeks.

Mansfield District Council architect Steve Melhuish said: “We wanted a roofing membrane with a proven track record, strong environmental credentials and longevity. D & T’s guarantee overcomes the design risk associated with the compatibility and interface between different components and elements of the roof build up.”

Rebecca Adlington first learned to swim at Sherwood Baths as a six year old. She went on to progress through district and county council swimming programmes before her triumph in the 2008 Olympics where she became the first British swimmer to win gold in almost half a century and smashed a world record in the 800m freestyle event, winning a second gold.
